Viscose is a widely used fiber in the fashion industry. It feels soft, falls flowing and is reminiscent of natural materials such as silk or cotton. But behind the shiny facade often lies a less than sustainable reality: the manufacturing process of conventional viscose is resource-intensive and can be harmful to the environment.
But there are alternatives. Fibers like Lyocell (also known as Tencel) offer a more environmentally friendly solution - with the same positive properties, but a much better ecological balance. Find out here what exactly makes the difference and why we at NNIstudio rely on sustainable materials.
Viscose: A synthetic fiber made from natural materials
Viscose is made from cellulose – mostly from wood fibers from beech, spruce or eucalyptus trees. That sounds natural at first, but the path from the tree to the finished fabric is long and problematic:
Complex production process – Conventional viscose is processed with toxic chemicals such as carbon disulfide, which are harmful to health and the environment.
High water and energy consumption – Production requires large amounts of water and energy.
Deforestation – Wood does not always come from sustainable sources, which contributes to the deforestation of rainforests.
Although viscose is biodegradable, the production process often makes it anything but sustainable.
Lyocell/Tencel: The better alternative
Lyocell is a further development of viscose - but with one big difference: the manufacturing process is much more environmentally friendly. Tencel is Lenzing's brand name for Lyocell and stands for particularly sustainable fibers.
Closed loop – The solvents are almost completely reused, which means there is hardly any waste.
Less water & energy – The manufacturing process requires up to 95% less water than conventional viscose.
Sustainable forestry – The wood for Tencel comes from certified, responsibly managed forests.
Particularly soft & breathable – Lyocell feels pleasantly cool on the skin, absorbs moisture well and is ideal for sensitive skin.
Lyocell offers all the advantages of viscose – just without the negative ecological impact.
Why do we rely on sustainable alternatives?
At NNIstudio, it is important to us to offer not only beautiful clothes, but also clothes that are produced responsibly. That's why we use environmentally friendly fibers like Lyocell to make a positive contribution.
🌿 Very comfortable to wear – Our fabrics feel soft, breathable and high quality.
🌿 Resource-saving – We choose materials that minimize water consumption and have less impact on the environment.
🌿 Fair & transparent – We ensure that our materials come from sustainable sources and are produced under fair conditions.
For us, Lyocell is the perfect alternative to conventional viscose – and a further step towards a more sustainable fashion world.
Conclusion: Sustainability begins with the materials
Viscose has its advantages, but not all variants are equally environmentally friendly. If you want to focus on sustainable fashion, it is worth looking at alternatives such as Lyocell/Tencel - a fiber that is not only fantastic to wear, but can also be purchased with a clear conscience.
